This sounds like a permissions issue. Try contacting your hosting company and ask them to check if the directory is writable. For more information see the Changing File Permissions article.

It sounds like you have either ran out of server space or hit a cap on the number of directories and files you can create on your host. Have you tried manually creating a directory on your host and uploading a file, just to see if that works?

Have you deactivated all other plugins and switched theme to a default theme such as 2017 to rule out a plugin conflict. Are you able to manually create the directory? Also I would check for Javescript errors by installing Debug Bar or by checking out the js console by selecting inspact element in your browser.

You should really know something about the plugins you are going to deactivate, but you just need to go to Dashboard>>Plugins and select the plugins to deactivate, if you have a lot of them it’s worth doing them in batches, say ten at a time.

Ah you mean creating the directory manually. A lot depends on your host, but in general you would get from your host the FTP username/password and other settings and put these into an FTP manager such as FileZilla. This will allow you to connect to your host and create a directory in the Uploads directory using it’s interface.

As a general rule you should always make sure you have FTP access to your host if you can. The reason being there are times when a plugin can bring down your site and the only way to recover it would be to FTP to the plugins directory and change that plugins directory name, so WordPress would no onger regard it as being active.

Mine is the same problem and it has existed for some months now but it is more specific. There is no problem with cover photo. However when a profile picture is uploaded , it shows up as a dot. One has no other option except to cancel or press the crop button. Once the crop button is pressed it allots a random small portion of the picture as the profile pic. Can anyone advice ?
