Usability Request: Skip the permalink page, and make links go direct to the linked page

  • Roger Coathup

Love the features of the plugin, but the current behaviour is confusing to the user.

If you click on a link (in the activity stream, or the links.. my links tab) it should take you direct to the linked page, and not to another ‘permalink’ page on the site.

e.g. if I create a link to the BBC homepage, the my links page shows:

    News: BBC – Homepage
    lorem ipsum….

As a user, I now expect (and want) clicking on BBC – Homepage to take me to the BBC website homepage. It doesn’t though, it takes me to the permalink page for the link inside my BuddyPress site. Once on that permalink page, I then have to click on the page title (not at all obvious) to get to the actual BBC site.

    Anyone else share this view?

Yes, I do, Links is a great plugin with lots of potential but seems like no development or support is going on.

@gearupandplay – yes, it’s a real shame that there seems to be no support / ongoing development for Links. It could be a useful plugin.

I’ll see if there’s a possibility for us to fund someone picking it up (it may have potential for one of our current projects).

@rogercoathup I do hope so. You don’t have any clue why some of the links would be redirecting to home page. At first it appeared to be only internal links to blog posts but after I messed around with it some I noticed it will allow me to create a link to certain blog posts, but not all. I can’t find a rhyme or reason to it.

Whats weird is the URL is correct when I hover over it so it’s definitely redirecting to homepage. I cant even navigate to the post normally through categories as when I click it still goes to homepage. Then if I delete the link it’s back to normal and I can access it.

You need to look at the template tags which are called in link-loop-item.php. You can filter on what they return to achieve any result you want.
