Username differs from BP handle when registration is done in wordpress backend

    I have set up a new BuddyPress site with WP 3.0 and BP 1.2.4.1
    If i create a user in wordpress backend with username a.sjogren (a dot in the username) it is accepted. The new user logs in with a.sjogren. But the handle in BuddyPress is not @a.sjogren, instead it is @a-sjogren! I think this is misleading for the user.

    If i allow users to register with the buddypress registrationform, no dots are allowed in the username and there is no problem.

    Is this i known issue? Workaround?

    If you see at my BP handle it is @t.sjogren! Is there a setting in the system that allows dots in the handle?
