When logged in to BuddyPress.org some links do not work?

    Hi,

For some reason when I am logged into this site I cannot access my profile when I click on my hyperlinkes name top right – I just go back to the homepage – bug? Also in the admin bar there is an option to Create a Group – surely this is not an option which every new user should have and in turn should be disabled for non-authorised users?

    Thanks

    Tony

Problem is because your username has a space in it and is using capital letters. Where did you originally register your account and how?

If you click on Create a Group, you will see that it’s currently disabled, however groups are essentially harmless and are meant to be ways for users to get together on their own and discuss whatever they want to discuss.

    Tony-

I had this issue as well about a month ago. The solution is simple. You need to create a new account.

Why? Because, like me, you created an account with a space in your account name (username). Also like me, you choose to use your real name. Logically enough, you put a space between your first and last name. You can see that by hovering your cursor over your name. Do you see the “%20”? That is the space.

This is not a BuddyPress issue. This is an issue with the way that WPMU processes new registrations, allowing spaces in usernames. Unfortunately, this can cause issues.

Andy knows more about this issue than I do, but suffice it to say, when creating your new username, do not put a space in it.

LOL – so maybe there should be an enhancement which checks client then server side? Thanks for the answer though – gives me what I need!

oh JJJ – to answer your Q, my username / login comes from wordpress.org so the integration works as far me logging in but there is clearly a problem with the way it is functioning. My inkling here is bug, perhaps an enhancement request. while is doesnt bother me per se it is a problem and requires a “fix”.

    > This is not a BuddyPress issue.

Usual excuse of all programmers. It not the software problem, is a problem of the software user =)

Do not take offence, it is humour. But the realistic humour.

    Ilya-

    I understand! :)

It is actually an issue with the way WordPress, or more precisely, Automattic has created the registration script. The script allows for spaces but then it can cause login problems.

Unfortunately, that issue needs to be addressed at a different level than BuddyPress. Since all of the moderators donate our time on these boards (i.e. we do not work for Automattic), we have no control over this issue.

As I said, I had the exact same issue and the only solution I had was to create a new username.

Fixing the username with a space in it – what are the options?

    1. Delete the user and fix the username in the external database?

    2. Change the settings in the site admin ‘users’ for the display name?

I ask because I have endured 4 system crashes and I am less than eager to recrash. Does the system remember the email addee if the user has been deleted, or is the entire user record wiped from the db tables?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, in advance, and thanks to Jeff Sayre for directing me to this topic.

    Brian-

You should ask this question as well in the WPMU forums as it is the WPMU registration functions that allow usernames to be created with a space in them and it is the authentication functions (when a user logs in) that then has an issue with the space.

I do not know if this has already been addressed in a newer version of WPMU, but Andy is aware of this issue and I assume that he has communicated it to Donncha.

You are limited in what you can do, but deleting the username is not advisable.

You could manually edit each user account that has this issue. If you do so, you’ll of course first want to make sure you have a backup of your database. But, if you go this route, you’ll need to tell each of those affected users that you have changed their login credentials. Otherwise, they will not be able to log in.

As far as changing the display name, that will have no affect on the username. Those are two different pieces of data.

When I migrated my site over from WordPress.org, I ran a loop through the users and just copied over the nicename for each one of them.

    Hi Jeff,

My external membership script that passes user information to Buddypress is handling this very well. I just add an underscore to the username in the external membership db and it passes the updated information via the plugin to Buddypress. Very nice!

What a relief! Thanks for your inputs.

    Hi guys,

I’m experiencing this problem as well. Is it possible to update the username in the DB and either remove the space or add and underscore? I have about 40 of these to deal with and I could simply email those use their new username.

Just wanted to check if that is a possible solution.

    Thanks.

Is there an issue with having periods in username? i.e. damon.cook
