The problem was I was still using bp-default theme and not a child theme – now I have a child theme and I copied the Events folder in to the new theme.

I Think I might be confused about the events folder. First time I left it in the events plugin folder, then I put it in /wp-content/themes/default, then I tried /plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default (I’m using the bp default theme).
