When I press view I just get the home page

That’s default behavior when you go to register page while you’re logged in. Log out first.

If your a beginner you should have just used the register page and changed the name tile to “Sign Up” and changed the slug of that same page to “sign-up.” Learn a bit more and get versed in the codex before you start customizing and changing things so much since you are a beginner.
