									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>it looks like going the opposite direction with the file permissions has applied the desired effect. that is, i changed the file permissions of the .htaccess file to read/write across the permission set &#8211; owner/group/public. this is unintuitive to me, but it&#8217;s hard to argue with the success. &#8230;it does make me a little nervous [&#8230;]</p>

									<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>thanks for the suggestions. it indeed was a memory limit problem with the PHP server. after modifying the .htaccess file to allow for a bit more memory, buddypress activated as desired. however, it looks like any time i make a configuration change in the wordpress settings, my .htaccess file is wiped out and replaced with [&#8230;]</p>
