I’ve replaced the hook “bp_init” with “after_setup_theme”. Now it’s working on my test installation.
I will update my plugin to version 1.5 in the next two weeks.

Also have a look at the version 1.2 (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/rs-buddypress-activity-refresh/download/). It’s not yet fully tested! In this version the Group Activity Streams will also add replies. Also the document title will change if a new activity appear.
