Had meant to add that it was tested setting a series of radio buttons and is why I had to change things around in that fashion. as field = the three radio options but also the parent radio as well

@sushkov, I’ve also re-installed WP 3.01 and upgraded BP to 1.2.6-bleeding ….. still no change.

Changed the permalink back to http://www.warchest.co.uk/blog/index.php/2010/09/sample-post/ with the message that “Permalink structure updated.” Which is confirmed by the reversion of the post URLs.

No, the WP is in a subfolder “blog” as you can see from previous examples. Is this the issue?

@sushkov, I did try to disabled all plugins and switch to the default theme – still the same problem.
