BuddyPress

Hello,

I’m 2 days in trying to simply get the “forums” to do anything other than
a: create a 500 error for the dashboard
b: actually create a forum (that otherwise says it’s installed correctly)

I’ve tried installing bbpress and buddypress in different orders – still breaks the dashboard
I’ve tried just installing the forum via the dashboard that comes with buddypress?

WP 3.1.2 and 3.1.3

All it does is break the dashboard. I can whip up a completely fresh install on a number of domains at my leisure, so i’m looking for specific versions of each to try as so this works.
Otherwise seems out of the box with the configuration in the instructions this just does not work.

I’m well versed in hacking apart open source platforms. However out of the box with the default themes, the best i can do is get buddypress working with a 404 where the forum should be. bbpress just breaks things – stand alone install v doesn’t do anything at all buddypress install…

Do you have a link to where you are installing or is this a local test installation?

This is the process I use for installing fresh copies of WP and BP.

Install WP
Change .htaccess to increase memory size and redirect to www
Login to admin panel
Set Permalinks
Go to /wp-admin/plugin-install.php — search for buddypress and install
Set theme
Go to /wp-admin/plugin-install.php – search for buddypress template pack
Install BP pack
Go to wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-general-settings and save settings
Go to wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-component-setup and save settings
Go to wp-admin/admin.php?page=bb-forums-setup and setup forums
Create Group
Create Forum
Create Test post

Please understand that bbPress, bbPress plugin, bbPress BuddyPress are all different products.

Awesome. I started to think there may be several pieces missing, so thank you very much.
I’m not sure what “Change .htaccess to increase memory size and redirect to www” is specifically, it may be something done by default when setting up the hosting account?

500 is a server-side error. It may be PHP memory-related, it might not be. You need to look in to your web sever’s error logs, or ask your host to do that for you.

well i’m about to do this for a 2nd time as per these instructions.
I don’t understand how bbPress would work if it’s a seperate plugin, which isn’t mentioned above. Unless it’s been integrated. I’m about 0-4 getting anything to show on the forums tab.
I do know if you have buddypress and bbpress both activated 3.1.3 it will destroy your admin dash until you remove one of them.

So after i do this again I’m going to post my status
It’s absolutely busted PHP code. What is it the logs will tell me?

It’s absolutely busted PHP code.

The majority of installations of BuddyPress have the internal forums component working just fine. Saying it’s “absolutely busted” is absolutely false.

The folks in this forum are friendly and willing to help you figure out your problem. It’ll help if you’re friendly too.

For clarity and referring back to your first post; bbPress in respect of BuddyPress is an integrated app you don’t install it separately it is part of the forums and simply needs setting up from the BP admin section of the dashboard, installing standalone bbPress will not work with BP forums in the integrated sense. bbPress plugin is a separate issue and is in beta release and at initial release won’t integrate with BP forums so you can likely ignore the plugin version for the moment.

I will try to be nice. Relative to me, this will not function out of the box. on a completely fresh install. Could well be a permissions issue. However, buddypress installs and works no problems at all. The forum setup says it did everything fine (or that i have to create teh bb-config.php file) it seems to be changing it’s mind.

So the situation is this:

buddypress – works installs no issues, very smooth.

forum setup finishes
dashboard ceases to function – website remains intact, forums tab goes to a 404 error.

v1.2.8 of buddypress
v3.1.2 and v3.1.3 of wordpress (both produce the same lack of function).

when i say it’s absoutely busted, relative to me it is, which makes sense as its not working for me.

bbPress is now absent from the picture as it seems it’s something all it’s own.

I’m at a loss as to how to proceed…

yup, same result, forums will not work for whatever reason. template pack or no, forum 404′s.
funny thing is it sucessfully created the bb-config.php with the correct info and everything.

I don’t care what happens to this site, i’m just trying to get an install that works.

is there a better thread on this? seems i can’t be the only person this has ever happened to.

I’d be happy to use an older WP version if that makes a difference.

EVERYTHING is basically at it’s default setting.
No idea, what the issue is here.

my bad it’s not a 404, there’s no error just doesn’t work. no 2 ways about it. i challenge all of you to please make me feel like an idoit on this one.

Clearly there are PHP fatal errors happening. If you can figure out what’s in your PHP error logs, it’ll specify where in the code the errors are happening.
