It is already there in the friends tab(in the user menu) for the displayed user.If you want to display it somewhere else on the profile, you can use this function as

I’d like my logged out users to be able to go to a member’s profile page and view how many friends they have.
Is this easily done? I’ve been looking though the functions available but cannot find anything.

I’ve already done that. With only the BP plugin enabled and even using the default template for Buddypress I get all my old comments showing that I posted them and linking to my member page.

@shanebp ’truly awful’ is a rather strong turn of phrase, the developer is quite well known in the community and might be upset by that
