A Catalog for Collections of Items: Do you know of one?

    @rolfe

    I’m looking for a Catalog for individual users to catalog their collection of physical items (paintings, for example). Each entry in the catalog would have photographs, a description, tags, and a couple of categories. Items would be available for BP-friends and BP-community members on a site to comment on, share, rate.

    Does a plug-in like this already exist? If not, could you describe at a high level the approach for creating one would be? I

    I’m new to WordPress/BuddyPress. I have a little coding experience and lots of determination to learn. (I just purchased the WordPress Bible, by Aaron Brazell)

    Any of your comments and suggestions are welcome!

    BP Album+ will probably do the trick for you.

    You can see some screen shots of what the next release will look like here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-album-new-features-requests-and-discussion/page/2?replies=16#post-43760

    As PCWriter said, if you’re collections are picture-based, BP-Albums could do the trick.

    If your colelctions are more information-based, I don’t know of any plugins that would fit your needs right out of the box. Do you have a target “collection type” in mind? You mentioned paintings – would it only be paintings for your site?

    I think it would be tough to make a generic “collections” plugin. The info you would want for baseball cards, paintings, bottle caps, books, etc are all somewhat different. If you have a client or a site with one specific collection, I would start there, and then see what you could change to make it more generic (if that’s your goal).

    That being said, I think your idea sounds cool, and many people would dig such a plugin.

    What about gravity forms and displaying the content via custom pages?

    Wow! Thank you for all of your responses. I’ll pursue these different suggestions and report back with the results.

    – I’ll definitely use BP Album+, but just as an album.

    – Gravity Forms seems like a sophisticated tool for generating forms and gathering user input, but the videos don’t show how to display that data in pages.

    – Pods CMS seems like it can do exactly what I want – create forms to gather detail and then create custom pages to display the data I gather. It’s powerful and flexible. I can get started using the pods demo video on wordpress.tv. I will have to learn PHP to really get the most out of it. I’m installing Pods now…

    Yup, Pods seemed like the best option for what you apparently want to accomplish. I’ve bookmarked the site too for future reference… it’s extremely flexible, yet looks quite simple to learn.

    Yeah, I had no idea about Pods. Seems pretty sweet. Kudos to el_terko!

    U R more than welcome, aside from technical details that are beyond my knowledge, there is a simple reason for choosing pods over gravity forms: PODS IS FREE, GRAVITY FORMS IS NOT.
