Activity Stream Change…

    @richcoy

Hello, I’m trying to make a social site where when the user logs in they are taken to their profile page and the activity thread is just a specific type of post that their friends have posted, it’s a prayer request site.

I’m thinking this would require a custom page template but I’m not very good at this level of customizing yet. Would this just be a custom loop? Because prayer requests can be very personal only friends should be able to see them. If you go to someone else’s profile on the site you do not see their prayer requests unless you are friends. Eventually I think allowing someone to check a box and set a prayer request as public is something I might want to do.

I’m just starting out and trying to decide if BuddyPress can fit my needs. Does this sound like functionality that BuddyPress can handle?

    Thanks, Rich

  • Try @modemloopers plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-extended-settings/
By the way I need a prayer request so I am interested in your site.

@shawn38 , Thanks. Doesn’t the BP FriendPress plug in handle some of what I’m looking for. It only has 1 star, is it not supported anymore?

You should create a custom component. This may be out of your coding skill level but you can check out the BuddyPress skeleton component plugin for example code.

Thanks @modemlooper I’ll check that out.

I just noticed a comment about BP FriendPress plugin. The answer is yes it is still supported. The stars rating system on here does not work accurately because there is no way my BP Buddybar back is scoring higher than my BP FriendPress plugin so instead of looking at stars go on WordPress and search for support for the plugin. If you see no support issues it is a good sign the plugin functions correctly.

fyi I just tried BP FriendPress, seemed great until I hit logout. Then login.php and all such pages just came up completely blank and would not load. Had to FTP in and remove the plugin in order to resolve the problem. BP 1.6.1 latest WP. :( I’m trying to do just friends activity and user updates on the activity stream.

Maybe its conflicting with another plugin. I am running it on 4 live sites and 8 local development sites with no issues.
I have had people have issues with a few of my plugins saying there was white space after the closing php tag. Can you please check this and remove and save the file and let me know if the issue is resolved. I think I need to update notepad++ because its three or four years old and I can’t see the whitespace which will cause errors.

Could be. Let me try it again and disable other plugins. I’ll let you know! :)

Only plugin that is active is Buddypress. Installed BP FriendPress, same issue. Once I logout, I get a redirect that goes no where and the screen is blank.

Then, if I open a new window and go back to domain.com, it still shows me as logged in.

I then opened a different browser, and went to domain.com. I put in my login info and tried to login. I again go to a blank white page, sitting at http://domain.com/wp-login.php

If I refresh the page on the 2nd browser, it takes me back to domain.com/register

    Strange!

Happy to help test. Where do you want me to look for the closing php tag at? which file, in your plugin?

Yep that was it, in bp-friendpress.php on line 226 the closing tag ?> has a blank space after the >

I removed that, and it appears to work. Let me do some more testing just to make sure.

@mattriggens Awesome! I suppose I need to update my old worn out editor.

Still trying to figure out how to get “View” out of the Members tab, when viewed by non-logged in people heh.

But your plugin is working great for the activity stream, thank you! Time to update that note pad :)

Gotcha and thank you for helping debug! :-)
