BP 1.2 Member & Group Directories

This is a discussion prompted by Andy’s release of a new default BP1.2 theme yesterday on Testbp.org.
1st: Excellent work, Andy. My critique is meant in the most constructive way and not to detract from all the effort. The majority of the new look and features are a major step forward, esp in areas of in-line activity.
The directories are in need of major work, I think. When site’s memberships become large (Testbp is over 14,000 so that could be considered large) it is critical to be able to both search AND browse for new members. Neither is effectively possible in the current state. Now, we have had the debate over the utility of sorting by someone’s 1st name (not a fan – imagine if the old phone books were that way?) but the directory still does that. The letter buttons are gone so you have to page through to get anywhere (1,000’s of pages) and I did a test search for “Tom” and you came up 2nd! the letters “tom” were in “Automattic” so that functionality was rendered unusable.
I only emphasize this because it is a major user complaint on our site and we are toying with a wholesale directory rewrite but kinda wanted to see where 1.2 and BP were heading before doing it.

The best possible option right now is using JJJ’s BP Member filter:

That way you can let your users filter users by name or profile field. This way if you search for “Tom” in the field First Name, you will get correct results.
Since JJJ is working on improving this plugin, I think it’s meant to become a core functionality in the near future. Until that time comes, I think this is a pretty good alternative for solving your problems Mike
