Buddy Press Home Page as a Content Page

I hate doing this on my first post. I tried searching around, maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I’m setting up a site at ajmember.com using wordpress mu 2.7. We want to use buddypress for a social area, but want to use our existing home page. Do I install buddypress in a subdirectory or can the buddypress home page just be another page in the root?

Any advice?

You can use any page template as a home page. In the admin of mu just have the front page as a static page choose the page, it could be called home, and then select the page template you want. I think page templates are the most under utilized feature of wordpress. You can make it anything you want.

If you do not know how to create custom page templates the search on wordpress. many tuts.

I would recommend installing WPMU in the root directory, and modifying home.php in your buddypress-home theme to best match your existing site while still incorporating most of the typical, familiar BuddyPress links.

To answer your questions, WPMU gets installed in the root directory, and BuddyPress is installed in the wp-content/mu-plugins/ directory. (Check codex.buddypress.org for install help.)

The BuddyPress homepage is the home.php file I mentioned above. The files in your root directory are just functionary place holders to help tell WPMU/BuddyPress what content to get from the database and then to tell them which theme files to display that data with.
