Buddypress and Multisite – 2nd and successive sites

    WP 3.5.1 and BP 1.6.4

I am installing a different theme for each of five (5) sites. Each them is 100% Buddypress ready. All is well with the first site “1″ as I setup the Buddypress conversion of components to each WP page. Upon viewing the site, the Members, Groups, etc. all show appropriately on each of their pages.

I then create a second site “2″, having set the global (*) for subdomains and everything is going fine. I then apply a second BP theme “Y” to this Site “2″. When I then view this site “2″, I find no Members, Groups, Activities arranged in this Buddypress-ready site “2″.

Next I switch theme “X” with theme “Y”, “Y” activated now in Site “1″ and, bazinga! Theme “Y” works just fine in Site “1″ (this being, of course, the primary site). This suggests to me that the Buddypress components are site specific vs. theme specific. So, I trundle on over to each site and can find no solution to my problem at the site level.

If the problem has to do with the BP Template pack, WP doesn’t like to mix and match non-BP themes with BP themes meaning you have to turn off the template pack after using it to update non-BP themes. Since I am not using non-BP themes, I should be able to leave it on and select theme “Y” at site “2″ by going through the BP Template pack, should I not? This problem feels like it is about 1″ away but…I need some help, please?

buddypress is designed to be network activated not individually activated on separate sites on a network. now my understanding is that it can be made to work that way but i wouldn’t suggest it personally.

Thanks, Ben. I must be confused. I want to do exactly what you suggest. That said, how would I go about that? I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong.

I have one network and 2 sites on that network now. The second site with a buddypress-ready theme will not launch with buddypress pages.

well what i would suggest is to network enable buddypress meaning that the buddypress pages would only exist on the primary site.

if you want to do the other thing i’d google “multiple instances of buddypress” looks like theres some good stuff there. but again i would not suggest that unless you are sure you need it that way because it’s not really the way buddypress is intended to be setup.

Thanks again, Ben. You’ve helped me realize that I had the whole “Multiple Buddypresses thing” screwed up in my mind. I was under the mistaken impression that I could have Buddypress on each site and have all sites come together in one big social membership.

The good news is that, while at breakfast this morning, I bounced this all off my wife, Teresa, who said, “why not have one website with multiple groups?” I knew that was possible but wanted the autonomy of different sites, different themes to have to develop and a multitude of development/design iterations. Why? Duh.

So, thanks for not getting back to me in light speed as you, and Teresa, helped me immensely and the path is now clear to do one website/many tabs/groups. Yay!

ok glad to help fyi there are some aspects that function across the network. For instance there is one unified user list (meaning if you are logged in on one site you are logged in as the same user in all sites as well) and some of the buddypress related widgets can be placed on any sub site also activity for the various sub sites will be listed on the primary sites activity feed (provided the sub site is public and you have the site tracking component enabled).
