buddypress with multisite takes over email notification

i am running buddypress on one of the subsites in my wordpress multisite network.
once installing buddypress, all internal notifications are now from the site which effectively uses buddypress.
i had to define the default site for buddypress in the wp-config.php file since it is not the root site.
how do i have all notifications come from wordpress as it used to?
notifications that are affected for example are: new site additions to the network, comment notifications from any site in the network, etc.
