Buddypress wont display local avatars

Some days ago my site stopped displaying the user uploaded avatars and it reverted all of them to the mystery man avatar.

It’s like buddypress doesn’t acknowledge that every user uploaded its avatar anymore. Even worse, on my test site everything still works correctly.

My test site is: http://control-total.com/amsofac/ (hosted on godaddy)
The live site is: http://amsofac.org.mx (hosted on a mexican hosting company)

The theme files and plugin files are exactly the same on both sites.

The avatar images are still on the uploads/avatars/ directory on both sites.

Call you call an avatar directly in a browser ?

    Something like:
    http://amsofac.org.mx/wp-content/uploads/avatars/1/some-existing-avatar.jpg

Yes, actually you can try almost all avatars, you can inspect element on the test site and see the address and just substitute the domain name. e.g:

    http://amsofac.org.mx/wp-content/uploads/avatars/14/52051200b90f99a798223d0f735d0a66-bpthumb.jpg

Are the dir permissions and owner the same on both the test and live sites ?

In wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-settings do you have this checked: “Allow registered members to upload avatars” ?

Have you tried to change an avatar and did it appear in the expected dir ?

    Yes to the settings.

Permissions: Ok there may be something here. I can access the ftp of the live site host and I just noticed something.

I can give the uploads directory all permissions (write read execute: 777) however wordpress will create a dir for a new user avatar (uplaods/avatars/59 for ex) but it cant upload files inside it. Apparently any directory I create with the ftp user has a different owner than the directories created by wordpress itself and even though permissions are set to 777 wordpress is giving me a write permission error when trying to upload any new avatar.
