can’t override image

I have the “buddypress-colours” theme which is a really simple theme with just a few CSS colors and some images. I am trying to override the header background image (of the default theme) so that I can make it red instead of blue. I’ve successfully changed the image in wp-contentthemesbuddypress-colours_incimages, but browsers are still loading the image from the bp-default theme. If I change *that* image, it works. Any idea how I can successfully implement the override?
