Change expanding activity update behaviour

Right now the Status update field on a profile page is really small (20 px tall) and expands outward and back to 20px when you leave it.
I want it to start off bigger because the input looks messy on my theme, but if I change the CSS to height 40px which looks much nicer, the javascript doing the resizing shrinks it back down to the original 20px.
What’s the cleanest way to change this value in the animation without editing the core buddypress files?
