Custom fields to be edited by admin and not user

Is it possible to create custome fields for user profile value of which can be edited only by admin and not the users.

I think there’s some hack to make certain field non-visible to others, so admin can control. Search the forum and document.

Yes, i did search before asking… if somebody can point me in the right direction i will appreciate it greatly.
