Friends Count under profile not counting properly

When I add someone as a friend and they don’t accept my friend request, my friend counter doesn’t go up
If I then try and remove them, my counter goes down. So I get a negative count even if we were never friends. So I end up with a negative friend count.
Was just playing around with this to see and I went through and added 7 people then deleted them and I got a whopping “-7″ in my friend count which is viewable to every other user who looks at my profile.
Bug?
