How to upgrade?

    How you guy upgrade? Just download the new individual package/plugin, make a backup for the older but same plugin, and then drop the new plugin into mu-plugins folder? Also making sure the old plugin won’t be in mu-plugins folder in case of conflicting? How about the combo one? Just backup all the old plugins, move somewhere else, and then drop new unzip plugins from buddypress-combo.zip into mu-plugins? If something goes wrong and you want to revert back to an older version, can you just remove the new one, and replace it with the backup of the old plugin?

    Which way you guy prefer to do it and think it is the easiest and safest? Thanks…

    I want to upgrade, but just in case, I also want to make sure, so I need your guy to guide me a bit. Still a newbie in this whole buddypress thing! Thanks…

    Well, I don’t know how others do it but I test the upgrade on a dev server, merge any custom that needs to have that done and upload to the live server overwriting all in mu-plugins. Same as you it seems.

    The creator of bp, Andy, is creating an enhancement that is being tested now for wpmu 2.7.1 that allows auto upgrades and activation for site wide plugins in wpmu. This means ‘pushbutton’ upgrades for bp. yah!

    The question is if something goes wrong, can you remove the new updated bp plugins in mu-plugins folder, and put back in the mu-plugins folder with the old backup bp plugins? I ask this because I fear that the new plugins change the database automatically, and so revert to the older plugins won’t do unless I have to take one extra step — backing up the database also.

    Then again, I guess backing up database every time you do any upgrade, minor or major, it’s so necessary, otherwise it will be a disaster if something bad happens.

    Also, it is recommended to update to BP RC1? Or should I wait for a more stable version? I saw some people report that they experienced weird things with RC1 for their installed BP.

    You can reinstall the old bp plugins and database backup if you choose to. Daily backups should be a part of life for you. Eat breakfast, backup the site. Yes, upgrade to RC-1. Support will be impossible otherwise. That will be the first thing anybody asks/tells you. If you do run into problems nobody is going to pay much attention to you because we are not going to revert to a previous version just to try and duplicate your problem. :) All versions of software have problems. RC-1 is the most recent and stable version of bp.
