I want to implement some features of buddypress but not all

OK I am working on a WordPress Mu site and I like some of the features of BuddyPress… like creating profiles, adding friends, etc… However I would like to implement those features without the plug-in basically transforming the whole site, since I still want the blogs to be the center point. Is there a way to keep the BuddyPress profiles but have them as a box on the blog? Or at least just have the blogs be the home page and the profiles linked to from there? If anyone has done this or knows how to do it I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

You can pick and choose which bp components to install. If all you want is Friends and XProfile then only install those. You do not have to use the bp home theme at all. It’s optional. You can use whatever wp themes you like on your blogs.

The member theme is not optional however. That’s what gives your users access to the profiles and friend functionality.
