Need to change color of Item Nav bar in BuddyPress

Hi – I need to change the color of the nav bar in BuddyPress – the second nav bar for members. It’s white with white text now and very difficult to use. I’ve tried everything including changing the css and reuploading the plugin. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
