[Resolved] New User Guide – What Options Do I Have?

Not sure, if I ask this in the right forum, it’s kinda combined question.

I’d like to guide new members and show them, what my website offers. This preferably happens on the website itself, where they can see it instantly. As of my limited knowledge there are these ways to do this:

    1. Redirect the user to a landing page with a “tutorial” right after their first login.
I’d like that best, but I’m kinda new to this hole thing and don’t know, how to achieve this…

    2. Use the Welcome Pack plugin
http://wordpress.org/plugins/welcome-pack/ This has a lot features to welcome new user, but it seems to be a really old plugin and I’m not sure, if it is still works, if it is still supported and if it will be supported in the future. Kinda risky…

    3. Send a detailed “Tutorial Mail” after registration
Again, I would prefer to guide the user right on the website, but if i could add a message like “hey, you’ve got a tutorial mail” right after the registration and somehow send a automatic mail to the given user, I guess this would be a alternative.

So over all, I’d like the approach of point 1 the most. If anyone could help a beginner out here, I’d give him/her a huge hug!

Sending a mail may be a good idea but you’ll have no waranty that the new user will receive it, or read it…
Leading to a tutorial after their first login is also not the best. How do you know it is the first login attempt, if a user modify his session, erase cookies ? Not all surfers keep browser history… or disabled JS ?

IMHO the most simple thing to do, is to add a link to the tutorial on the register page with some description. And to add a tutorial item to one of your site menu.

I have to agree with @danbp here as he stated:

With that said don’t you think a user that has already registered and activated their account on your site would be slightly annoyed at being redirected to a tutorial page every time they login?

    Good thoughts, thank you!
What about a hint on the activate page? It would be seen just once on activation.

How can I add content like text, link, maybe even a image (that shows where on the page the user can find the tutorial) right below the activation confirmation?

Yes you can do that by overloading the template file in a child theme and adding the proper markup in the activate.php file. If your unsure how to accomplish this then do a search as this has been covered many times on the forums. Just keep in mind the directory structure needs to remain intact.

@bphelp Okay, I will do the research and try it. Here’s the hug: *HUG* 🙂
