possible to keep people out of the /forums directory with .htaccess?

Okay. I am working on a site that is using groups — some private, some public. I had the brilliant idea to use .htaccess rules to keep people out of the forums directory, so the forums of the “private” groups would actually be private.

The only problem with this, is that every time I disable browsing the /forums directory, it breaks forums for the entire site. I have tried various configurations of deny all, allow localhost, 127.0.0.1, and the server’s own IP address. and still no dice.

Doesn’t buddypress pull forum posts straight from the MySQL db? Can someone give me a clue about this?
