Here are a few simple enhancements I would suggest for the default template and plugin itself:

1. Dangerous delete!! The delete message button is perilously close to the “do with selected messages…” checkbox. And there is no “are you sure?” warning. I would move the delete button AWAY from the checkbox and add a failsafe step.

2. New message notification – persists too long. Clicking on the message title should cause the new message notification to decrement or disappear. Right now, if you have 4 new messages, you’ll see a little “4″ on your profile page; if you click on a new message, the notifier stays at 4 *until you navigate away from the message.* Instead, the number should switch to “3″ as soon as you click on the message title (analogous to email read/unread notification).
