What is the best way to change language, terms or words that are not in template

What is the best way to change language, terms or words that are not in template files.

I ask this because the mo po stuff fails even after trying in all ways and all fixes

For example the word “Just me” ( under Activity) occurs in buddypress/bp-activity.php

and not in any template files.

What is the best way to change such words ?

I already read those pages in details and tried all the possible things and got NO reply.

I would have been happy if things worked that way and I requested something in the above link. Going by template files is cumbersome but problem is certain words can’t be changed at template level, so I was seeking an way out.
