What's the point in the Friends component?

Why bother? I reckon it probably even caused a few headaches to develop alongside the rest of the software. The component is utterly useless if it doesn’t change the user-end experience.

In every social network post-MySpace, “Friends” have determined the content that showed up for the user. I don’t have any experience in PHP – but if I did, the first thing I’d do is develop a means for the Friends component to have some actual meaning. Like. Maybe. To do what people assume such a thing could be used for. But that seems to be the last thing on the list around here.
The one use Friends fulfills on my installation is one-on-one chat, and I had to pay through the hole for that!

I mean, really, what’s everybody smoking? I see this on Ning and a few other social network platforms. You add some Friends and that’s neither here nor there; they just show up in a box on your profile and you forget about it. Talk about a complete waste of resources.

inb4: someone suggests one of the 2 plugins out there to add some significance to the component. They’re not in the repo, and for good reason – they bloody well don’t work.

Otherwise, Buddypress is fantastic. I don’t mean to belittle all the work gone into it. My mind is just blown here, is all.

There is a setting in the admin to turn it off. You are right about friending not having much of a feature. It’s main purpose is for grouping. When you friend you can filter content.

The friends component is great to quickly filter the activity stream to see what certain people have been upto on the site.

It’s probably the sole feature of it to be fair, but it is useful in that respect.

It also ties in nicely with instant chat plugins such as comet chat.

Don’t you also have to be friends to invite somebody to join a group ?

-if so, that should be an admin option, imo.
