Theme Question… Proper Structure for a Theme?

Here’s my issue. I built a custom child theme for buddypress. My issue is that I import the CSS from buddypress and I modify the buddypress files shown in theme editor to add things like an addition sidebar and such.
Here’s my problem. When I update buddypress, the new files overwrite my changes each time. I think it’s because I modifed the original buddypress theme.
So, should I just download the theme BEFORE I upgrade then upload again later? That seems like the simple solution. I would have to download my child theme and download the default buddypress theme as well.
Does this make sense? Maybe I’m doing this wrong. I’m open to ideas and suggestions.

This is why your changes get blown away.
If you need to modify the original files for a child theme, don’t.
Take a copy of that file, add it to the child theme folder, make your mods there.
