How to change @username to something less generic like {@username} for mentions

On my site having @username for mentions is not working because my site is getting it confused with email text. I’m trying to come up with someway of customizing the @username to something more specific like brackets.

for example @username –> @username}

I’d rather not alter the code, is there someway of doing this on a plugin or theme side?

It’s possible, but you’d have to basically remove the actions for the original bp_activity_at_message_notification() and bp_activity_at_name_filter() functions and replace them with your own functions.
