Extend BP (new subnav item to “groups”) [WP2.9.1 BP1.1.3]

How can I extend a plugin without changing the core, so later updates of the plugin wont brake my work?
When I enter the URL “http://servername/groups/” I get an alphabetical listing of all groups. Entering “http://servername/members/my_username/groups/” (or clicking “Groups” in the user nav) gets me to recently active groups. Now how can I get the first URL to be a subnav item of “Groups” in the usernav?
I managed to add a menu point by adding to “$bp->bp_options_nav” in my functions.php (by doing something like “add_action(‘get_header’, ‘add_to_options_nav’);” ) . The link in the menu works and I get to the desired page. But the problem is, on this page the “Groups” menu is no longer expanded and the subitems (like “create groups” and “invites”) are no longer visible.
