Replies disappear when I try to reply on Activity Stream page?
-
On the website, usually on the Activity Stream page, I’ve tried to reply to other peoples comments they’ve made on the website, whether it be posts I’ve made, or other peoples pictures they’ve uploaded & it will post the comment/reply of mine, but as soon as I refresh the page, it deletes them? I’m not sure if other users are also having this same problem, but there isnt much activity going on my website and this may be one of the reasons why.
Ideas?

Tried to reply to others again today & still having this problem. It’s actually been going on for quite some time I believe.
bump…
What versions, and what theme, are you using?
It says Version 3.0.1 at the bottom right corner of my dashboard & I’m using a modified Headlines theme by Labsecrets.com
Ideas?

@johnnyscience – does it work if you switch to the default theme?
If so, you know the problem is in your theme, and you should probably try contacting labsecrets.com for advice on this one
If not, fire it back on here
Ok, I used this theme: BuddyPress Default 1.2.3 by BuddyPress.org
And tried to reply, which it did and it posted, but then when I refreshed the page again, the reply was once again gone?
So if its not the theme, what next?
bump…
Anyone at all? This is really lowering the usability of my website between members if they cant even comment on each others posts…
This isn’t an issue I can replicate or that I can recall hearing of before, and the same probably goes for the others, thus it’s very difficult to help further.
I assume you haven’t any plugins running that may be having an untoward effect on replies, or have grabbed any functions to put into functions.php. You have checked all your BP options carefully, nothing disabled?
You are running latest stable BP?
These are my active plugins, which one do you think would affect something like this?
Adrotate
After the Deadline – Adds a contextual spell, style, and grammar checker to WordPress. Write better and spend less time editing.
Akismet – checks comments against akismet web sercvice to see if they look like spam
Autochimp – mailchimp plugin

Buddypress – this does have an upgrade to 1.2.5.2 – would this affect things perhaps?

WPtouch iphone theme
Any ideas which one it could be?
I just upgraded the Buddypress plugin & tried to reply to something in my activity stream & it replied, I refreshed the page & it disappeared again.
So that wasnt the issue.
and now after I’ve upgraded to the new Buddypress it’s removed the default avatar I uploaded to show in new users profiles – any idea how I make it come back?
You have got a huge heap of plugins running. The first rule of troubleshooting is to reduce down to the most basic functionality to produce a test case that demonstrates the issue or not, ideally one runs the basic installation which will not demonstrate the issue, then start to add back in plugins one by one checking each time to see if the issue kicks in again, or work that in reverse and start disabling plugins one by one checking as you go so that you know what plugin causes the problem.
This is exactly the same reason we ask that people drop back to the default theme as doing that tells us immediately if an issue is related to BP or a custom theme.
Ok I disabled every plugin except the Buddypress plugin & still was having the same issues. I also dropped all the way back to the BuddyPress Default 1.2.5.2 by BuddyPress.org while only having the Buddypress plugin active.
And I have upgrade to the newest version as well.
Still when replying to someone on the Activity Stream page, the reply will post like normal, then when I refresh the page, the reply is gone.
It DOES however seem to post the reply to my wall, so its being registered some where… just not where it counts lol
So any ideas now?
Have you checked to see if this is happening to other users also? Like it’s not some weird cache setting on your browser?
Yes it is happening with other users…
@johnnyscience – sounds like a javascript / CSS problem to me – are you definitely running with the vanilla BuddyPress install AND the BuddyPress default theme.
No CSS or HTML changes at all?
The default theme uses javascript routines to display a lot of the reply code – if you are using a different theme, you need to also modify your javascripts to ensure they still work
Yes I ran only the Buddypress plugin & the BuddyPress Default 1.2.5.2 by BuddyPress.org theme
Any ideas on what we could look at in the default theme/plugin?
If its posting to MY wall, why wouldnt it post to the Activity Stream then when I’m actually replyin ON the Activity Stream page?
Are you using the default bp-custom.php or have you got a bespoke version?
I’m not really sure to be honest, where & how can I tell?
A bunch of members are now starting to complain about this and its really limiting the sociability of the website…
If its affecting just the single page, but posts to other parts of the website, should we take a look at the Search code within the php of the activity stream page?
I assume its activitystream.php then? Any idea where it would be?
it’s almost certainly a problem with your setup, and nothing to do with the core BuddyPress code.
As I suggested, check your bp-custom.php file first of all – it goes in the /plugins folder – did your developer put any functions in there that modify the behaviour of your site?
p.s. are you sure you are using vanilla BuddyPress – you (or developer) haven’t modified any of the core files?
Considering that bp-custom.php doesn’t exist unless the developer creates it then if it is found that is likely to be the culpret.
As Roger says though this problem has to be the result of some customisation or plugin somewhere BP 1.2.5.2 onwards doesn’t show this issue in a vanilla install.
The only .php files I see inside of my plugins folder are hello.php & index.php?
There is a folder for every other plugin…
But if I was using ONLY the Buddypress plugin 1.2.3 & the BuddyPress Default 1.2.5.2 by BuddyPress.org theme, how would anything be messed up with the setup?
Ok what does this mean? Because I tried to change themes & now my website doesnt work & this error message shows up:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_dtheme_ajax_querystring() (previously declared in /home/jscience/public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/ajax.php:20) in /home/jscience/public_html/wp-content/themes/bp-magazine/_inc/ajax.php on line 63
