What are the criteria for cropping zones in Avatars

Sorry guys, This has been one I have wondered for a while.
It seems every image I upload as an avatar has a different cropping zone which I presume is to do with the size of the image. I often upload images and the cropping zone isn’t big enough/ wont stretch far enough to get in the part of the image I want.
Is there a particular dimension/ ratio images should be. Just so I can warn members that’s all.
