Theme won’t update :(

I have a new buddypress installation and the functionality is there. However, I already had a theme I am using. I tried to use the template plugin, and it installed all the necessary files into my template folder. However, nothing I do seems to be changing those files. If I open index.php under the activity fold and delete everything in that file — NOTHING changes on my site! It still works perfect. As you can imagine, if none of my changes are taking effect, then I cannot make the themes match
Has this happened before? Any ideas what I can try?

OK, if anybody else has this problem, it is a simple but odd solution. The instructions in “bp compatibility” that shoes up after you install the plugin tells you to modify the code THEN hit continue. Turns out you won’t see that code change Until you hit continue and select the option to bypass bp css.
