Buddypress Very Slow / Resource Intensive

    @elbowrobo

    I have a BuddyPress website I have been using for about 3 years. I’ve “started over” a couple of times to ensure clean DBs and other stuff but generally BP is very slow.

    I am on Shared Hosting (I think this is the problem).

    With clarification:
    I am talking about the raw processing time for generating the page, NOT delivering it.

    It takes about 1 second with WordPress on its own. (Memory Usage- 25,011,632 bytes)
    It takes about 5 seconds with BuddyPress enabled. (Memory Usage- 36,888,480 bytes)

    Any ideas?

    I’m sure WordPress is bigger than BuddyPress yet it takes so much longer to “run” it. Will turning BuddyPress features off show an improvement (and if I do does their data remain?).

    Anyone got any ideas?

    I have compressed everything, running cached and minified files. Delivery to the browser takes 0.5 seconds. But actually responding after the initial load takes 5 with BP and 1 without.

    Thanks,
    Eliott

    I have managed to run some profiling with and without BuddyPress enabled:

    When it is disabled: 1674 different functions called in 3102 milliseconds
    When it is enabled: 2602 different functions called in 5446 milliseconds

    It calls just short of 1000 more functions which takes 2.5s longer. How would I go about optimising the BP code to reduce this?

    Thanks,
    Eliott
