BuddyPress Version: 1.9.2 update

    I just did an update to Version: 1.9.2 and it broke my WP installation… all I got was a blank white page. On other browsers the site displayed ok if not logged in. But the login page was blank white again. So I reverted to the previous BuddyPress 1.9.1 via FTP…. Anybody know why this happens? What is version 1.9.2 supposed to fix anyway? I could not find any documentation. It is an important update?

    There’s very clear documentation, right there on the main blog!
    https://buddypress.org/blog/
    If you want help, you’ll need to provide as much detailed info as possible on your setup, in particular your theme in use and it’s approach to working with BP.

    PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_is_active()

    That’s the error I get in my child theme functions.php …. but I haven’t a clue what to do to fix it… Hey guys, I’m a journalist, not a bit twiddler…. The BuddyPress team is world famous for passing the blame to other plugins – instead of its own bad installation procedures… I’ve noticed this scapegoating going on for years …

    The documentation says: “improvements to theme compatibility.” But judging from all the complaints on this forum, I’d say that version 1.9.2 has introduced new theme compatibility problems…

    Are you using root profiles by any chance?

    @hnla
    there have been quite a few reports about that function since 1.9.2 dropped. I’ll have a look into it…

    @henrywright cool, hadn’t noticed anything but then seldom run that constant, if you spot anything naturally ticket it.

    @fkapnist
    you’re not doing yourself any favours – in life you get what you pays for, know where I’m going with this? 🙂

    Complaints? no no complaints here, this is a volunteer help forum.

    BP installs just fine in the vast majority of cases, run BP with a correctly written theme and you’ll have no problems unless some errent plugin is at work.

    @fkapnist,

    Slow down with that Mr. Journalist! Will you!?

    It shouldn’t be probably out of your league investing in some enterprise-class social networking package out there or simply employ an in-house wordpress developer to do your bidding. It’s quite cheaper than you think!

    If you encounter any problems with your upgrade, courtesy (which you people often harp about in your profession these days) demands that you ask politely.

    @henrywright
    – A fellow BP enthusiast asked you a simple question with the aim of lending a hand, but obviously you couldn’t pass up the opportunity to throw that worn-out jibe.

    Next time, ask a developer how to properly manage a bp install. Wisdom preaches that you maintain at least 2 separate installs of BP (one as production site and the other as development install [a cornucopia of your production install]).

    When an upgrade such as this is pushed, you would want to play around with it on your development install for proper behaviour before pushing it in live.

    Who asked me a question? And what worn-out jibe are you talking about?

    I Finally got it. I deactivated all my plugins except BuddyPress and I switched to a safe theme (TwentyTwelve)…. I was then able to update to BuddyPress 1.9.2 with no problem.. Except that some plugins lost their settings and had to be re-configured….. So why hasn’t anyone come up with a simple WP plugin that automatically deactivates all plugins for updates and then reactivates them again?.. hmmm…. sometimes the obvious solution is overlooked.
