WordPress in it's Own Directory for BP2.0?

Will BP 2.0 “WordPress Rewrite Rules API integration #4954” add support for installing BuddyPress for WordPress sights that have the WP core files in their own directory? I’m not sure if I’m using the right terminology there but for example:
Site URL= mysite.com
WP file directory = public_html/wpdirectory
and the WP index.php is placed in the web root (public_html) directory.
I’m sure hoping so!

Er. I’m not sure this is a valid WordPress setup?

How exactly does BuddyPress not work with this at the moment? Does everything else work fine, including blog permalinks?

This is a supported and well documented wordpress installation configuration (https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory).

There is a very specific caveat in the buddypress installation documentation stating that it Does Not support this sort of wordpress installation.
See the fifth bullet down on https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/before-installing/

I thought that perhaps with the revised URI re-write, this WP installation configuration might finally be supported

So, are the minimum system requirements changing for BuddyPress 2.0 to support “Giving WordPress Its Own Directory”?

I understand that the URL rewrite issue has been moved to BP 2.1. However the question still has not been answered as to whether this will solve the BP incompatibility with standard WordPress installation “In Its Own Directory”.
Will fixing the URL rewrite issues resolve this incompatibility issue as described here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/before-installing/
