"Send To" field in messages not recognizing usernames

I am working with WordPress 3.9 and BuddyPress 2.0 at http://www.globaltrach.org
When I try to compose a message I get the same error message every time, “There was an error sending that message, please try again.” There is not an autocomplete option for filling in usernames or friends so I think it is not recognizing the usernames I enter.
The only workaround I found for this is to go to someone’s profile and click “Send a Private Message”. This works but requires a LOT more clicking. And if I try to add additional usernames I have the same problem as above.
I changed to a default WordPress Theme to see if this would solve the issue (Twenty Fourteen) but I have the same problem.
I have very little knowledge of php so please be detailed in your response if the solution requires changes to the php files.
