I need to stop users with only subscriber status from BuddyPress private messaging.
The plugin ‘BuddyPress Restrict Messages’ looks like exactly what I need but it does not seem to work and appears to be abandoned.
Any advice/suggestions on how to do this. please?

It sounds like a theme or template issue. Try these steps:
Switch to a default BuddyPress-compatible theme to see if profiles display correctly.
Check that all BuddyPress pages (Members, Activity, etc.) are assigned in BuddyPress → Pages.

I found the extra pages in the Posts table of the database and removed them. Prior to that I installed the bo-classic plugin, but the pages didn’t show up in my pages list so the database was what I needed.

For the following BuddyPress components, you will either see URLs or Pages:
