Is it possible to pre-fill activity input form with default text?

I’m wondering if it is possible to pre-fill the activity input textarea with certain text and when the textarea is selected the default text is automatically removed?
I’m building a homepage in which the activity block only occupy a small area, so I want to move the “what’s new?” into the textarea in order to make the page neat and save space.
