Checking if a user is in a group

How would I go about conditionally checking whether or not a user belongs to a group?
The scenario is this: when viewing a single user profile page, I’d like to display X content if user belongs to Y group. Would this be possible? Searching around I found some conditionals that check when a certain _group_ template is displaying, but not whether a single user belonged to said group.
Any ideas? We are using the groups to indicate which phone/carrier you have and would like to do something with this info on the profile pages.
