hide groups tab if member not aproved – Buddypress Registration Options

Ive been trying to hide the groups tab in header.php by using `if($status=”approved”)` .. show the tab. But I cant get it to work. Am I meant to add anything extra?
Could anyone shed some light as to how I can check if the member has been aproved in my themes files please? I also have a custom function where I

i am using bp role manager to create roles for users in wordpress.
now i want to that only user with specific role should be approved by admin through BuddyPress Registration Options plugin it is now used for every type of users registered.
how can i do this plz suggest.
