How to use the WP Comments sign in form to register commenters as members?

Has this been done? I think it would be very interesting use of the comments sign in. I have a site that comments are only allowed by registered users…so the sign in comments form is never used. I thought this would be a good place to add a Registration/Login form instead. I wonder if I can just use the native form and not just stick in a chunk of code for the bp registration/login form. Any ideas on this?
