Images – where to serve from?

Hi
No doubt this has been covered before, but I couldn’t find anything specific with a quick search.
I’m building a WordPress / bbPress/ BuddyPress site and just got thinking about images uploaded from users, can it be added to the posting of a status and / how should I handle these? For example, in forums that I use, you mostly have to link them from somewhere like flickr.
Sorry if this is a daft question, brain is a little fried today!
