If you activate Twenty Fifteen and then go to example.com/members/USERNAME/profile/change-avatar/ you should see a button which lets you select a file to upload.

Twenty Fifteen, meaning the theme? I’m currently using an updated Twenty Fourteen theme, which I prefer the look. Is it necessary to change? I’m on the updated wordpress version and the most update buddypress version.

Yes, Twenty Fifteen the theme. The idea is to check if things work with the default theme. If things work then you’ll know it’s your current theme that has introduced the problem.

I’ve just tested using 2015 and it works for me.

It’s the same with either theme.

As I say it’s working for me. Likely you have a plugin (or two) installed which could be causing the problem. What plugins do you have installed?

I got rid of Profile Builder, just in case. It wasn’t needed. But the problem persists.

Could it be a permissions thing?

@griswolddad – disable all plugins except buddypress. Then go look around your site and see if you can find the ability to upload avatar. I find this fastest by hovering over the top right admin bar (when logged in already) (howdy admin_ – click edit profile.. then “change profile picture” is in the profile area..

If that works, then you know it is one of your plugins that you disabled causing a problem… so reactive them one by one until you find the problem pops up again..

if that doesn’t work – then it’s likely a theme issue..
