Some basic Questions before installing BuddyPress.

    Hello there,
    I am totally new to BuddyPress, I have done some research but still can’t find all of my answers. So here I go:

    1. Is it possible to have the BuddyPress “Home” once logged in look like the one of Facebook or Twitter? Well, so that it shows activities based on the people you follow or are friends with.
    2. Is it possible to follow or send a friend request to a Member?
    3. Is there a Hashtag System in BuddyPress?
    4. Can you tweet or update your Status, if yes can you also add Images or Videos?
    5. Can a regular User create a Group?

    If you know the answer is yes, can you please tell me how? If you know that any answer is No, do you know any third party Solutions?

    Thank you very much.

    @danbp I do understand what you mean.. but I just want to know how is the Home.. is it possible show activities based on the people you follow and/or are friends with?

    @mcuk

    Yeah you can have an activity page (or Home as you are calling it) showing activities of people you are friends with.

    Personally I see the whole ‘friends’ thing as just a connection between two members. So you can ‘friend request’ and become ‘friends’ with the person and have their stuff appear on an activity page. But you can use various tools to change ‘friends’ to be ‘follow’ or ‘colleague’ or whatever you feel like. Hence why I see it as a ‘connection’ because you can call it whatever you want depending on what site you are building.

    @mcuk Thank you VERY much for your answer. This is the answer I’ve been looking for.

    Just bear in mind what Dan said though, ‘if you know how’.

    It really depends on what you want to do, the level to which you want to customise etc. So CSS and PHP skills are likely needed unless you decide on changing v little. There are documents and the support forum though where people have done stuff and posted how to do stuff or various pieces of code etc. (that’s what I’ve been using).

    @mcuk but can i do something if i do not have php skills? Can I still make it so that it shows stuff from friends and/or followers in the activity page?

    @mcuk

    I think it does that by default yeah (i say ‘think’ because I’ve been customizing for a little while now and can’t remember 100% what is default). But I’m fairly sure, 95%, that what you are describing is default.

    I’ve basically started from zero knowledge on Buddypress and used the forum & Codex for help to progress. Other users and moderators have usually posted relevant stuff and have helped me out on things too. So no php skills shouldn’t hurt unless you want to customize heavily. Lots of code is scattered around the forums.

    Hey there!

    Welcome to the BP community, I hope you decide to take the dive. I was where you are about three months ago. Though I’m not an expert, I can offer a fellow newbie perspective after a couple of months in.

    1. Yes, if you mean can you have your activity feed as your homepage. Though if you want it to look like facebook or twitter color and layout wise you’ll have to look into a fb/twitter type of theme. (google wordpress themes or wordpress premium themes if you don’t mind paying)

    2. You can send a friend request. If you want to add a follow button, you’ll have to look into plugins. (google wordpress plugins)

    3. Nope, but that’s again where a plugin can help you out. I use Hashbuddy. Works perfectly.

    4. Again a plugin. Usually a sharing one you’ll have embedded in your pages, post or activity feed. BP doesn’t come equipped with photo/video support, so plugin. I use Activity Stream Plus and Mediapress is pretty comprehensive although it’s still in/just coming out of beta.

    5. And yes, you can set this option in your BP settings so every user can create groups.

    Hope this helps! I know it can be a daunting and overwhelming start with so many options out there. BP is pretty easy to learn and pretty solid right out of the box. Add some plugins to give it polish and its a real nice product. Make sure you google themes and plugins to get a good idea of what’s out there. Best of luck to you!

    @ihavetodothis Thank you very, very much… this is the answer I was looking for. But to be honest the Answer of my first Question is unanswered, I have asked if it’s possible to default set the Activity to show stuff (Pictures, Videos, Status and etc.) from your friends and/or Followers instead of every Member?

    Does anyone know the answer to my Question?

    Each BP activated component has is own page. Activity has such a page.
    When you go to WordPress settings, you can asign a default homepage. Choose Activity and you’re done.

    But now it’s time you make a real test on a local install. It’s the best way to get answers.

    yes.. I am doing it now, already installed the plugins and theme. 🙂
