How does the type=popular parameter work?

    This article says you can add the parameter type=popular for the members loop:

    Members Loop

    example<?php if ( bp_has_members( 'type=popular' ) ) : ?>;

    What is the ‘popular’ parameter based on? I know what all the other parameters do except for this one.
