Is Enabling Multisite Necessary In Order to Enable Site Tracking?

    I read in the codex that Multisite must be enabled in the wp-config file in order to turn on Site Tracking. Is this still true? Is there a reason why Multisite needs to be enabled for sitewide tracking to work?
